Celebrate the Rothko Chapel's 55th Anniversary
12-3pm || Free, drop-in event with activations across our campus

We were honored to celebrate the 55th anniversary of the Rothko Chapel, which was consecrated and opened to the public on February 27, 1971, followed by a public dedication of the Broken Obelisk to Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on February 28, 1971. For 55 years, the Chapel has served as a space for contemplation, dialogue, and shared humanity—where art, spirituality, and human rights meet. We invited our community to join us in gratitude for the vision that shaped this sacred space and to reflect on its enduring presence in the world.

12:00 - 3:00pm | Chapel Plaza – Guided visits were available; food and drink vendors were open.

12:45 - 1:15pm | Chapel Sanctuary – Remarks were delivered by President Abdullah Antepli, followed by a crystal bowl meditation led by Gena Davis.

1:30 - 1:45pm | Reflection Garden – Contemplative music was performed by a DACAMERA Young Artist.

2:00 - 2:15pm | Welcome House – Young Visitors' Story Time featured My Voice is a Trumpet and Sometimes People March.

2:30 - 2:45pm | Welcome House – Young Visitors' Story Time featured The Other Way to Listen and I Am Human: A Book of Empathy.

Archival ephemera from past Chapel programs were available throughout the day at the Welcome House for visitors to collect and take home as a piece of Rothko Chapel history.
